"Could You . . . "

     I want you to take a moment and close your eyes.  Now imagine someone you love who is nearest and dearest to you.  Think about them.  Hear the voice.  Picture the face.  Hold them in your arms. 

    Now in your mind slap them in the face.  Harder!  Scream insults at them.  Louder!  Spit on them.  Bind them.  Tighter!  Can't picture it because it's too uncomfortable?  Make yourself see it in your mind's eye.  Take the whip and strike them.  Now pull back quick and hard on the whip so that the pieces of bone and glass tied to the ends grip the flesh and tear it.  Again . . . This time so hunks of muscle are torn from the bloodied body.  Again!  AGAIN!!  Make yourself feel it and hear it and smell it.  Take a hammer and spikes and drive them through the ankles and wrists.  Make sure they are good and tight.  Finally, watch them hang there . . . for hours . . . watch them gasping for air as they suffocate . . . And know that all the while you could stop it . . . that your loved one could stop it.

     Friend this is what God allowed to happen to His dearly beloved Son.  Not because He deserved it, but because I deserved it . . . You deserved it.  The Father could have stopped it.  The Son could have stopped it.  But they did not.  Why?  So that the price could be paid for your sin and mine.  So that the justice of a just God could be served.  So that the righteousness of the holy Son could be imputed to those who obey His word. 

     Could you have given the life your loved one if it would save the souls of many?  If you had, how would you feel when a majority of mankind would reject the gift? 

     Have you accepted or rejected the gift?
