 “Of  Star Wars and Fathers”

I love, and am very proud, of my son-in-law.  He is an excellent husband and wonderful father; but probably the most endearing trait that he possesses is that of being an avid Star Wars fan.  (Well…maybe the Husband and father thing are a little more endearing than Star Wars.)

His son, Connor, is three years old.  A few weeks ago he was boldly reciting his litany of Star War phrases for our preacher.  The preacher was thoroughly enjoying the ‘show’.  The drama that Connor used, along with the large number of quotes he was able to deliver was amazing.  How did this little one develop such a passion for Star Wars?  The answer is very simply stated:  His father has the passion.

Dads, take the time to realize what a huge impact you have on your children.  Your passions will so often be their passions, your strengths so often their strengths.  Do you want your child to be a superb spouse?  Do you want your children to be great parents?  Do you desire that they be compassionate, loyal, and honest?  Then model those character traits from the earliest years in your child’s life.

Now back to Star Wars.  As he concluded his recital, Connor quoted Luke Skywalker, something to the effect of, “Vader, I will not turn to the dark side!”  While this dramatic proclamation brought about a belly of laughter to all of us, it also spoke once again to the influence of fathers.   Dads, you have such a tremendous power over the choices your child will make in later years that will keep them from turning to the dark side, spiritually and morally speaking.  The rewards for utilizing that influence are innumerable.

So today as we honor the fathers among us, we want you to know that you are loved and admired.  We appreciate you for the profound impact you have, and positive influence that you are, on our children.  We see you as so much more than the “garbage-taker-outer, lawn-mower-weedwacker, Mr. fix-it, car-fixer” man.  We see you as our strength, our leader, our protector.  We love you all.

Happy Father’s Day 2005
