“An Undivided Heart”

King Saul sinned against God over and over again.  God told him through Samuel that the kingdom would be taken from him and his family (1 Samuel 15:24-29).  King Saul knew that it would go to David;  therefore Saul tried several times to kill David.  The twentieth chapter of 1 Samuel tells how, with the help of Saul's own son, Jonathan, David escaped.

An army of men began to surround David against Saul.  David called them his "mighty men of valor".  In I Chronicles 11:7, they are named along with some of their mighty deeds (good reading).  In I Chronicles 12, we are told of some other "mighty men of valor" (v.21) from the tribes of Israel and some of their deeds.  Even Saul's own tribe, Benjamin, was among them.

Take a close look at 1 Chronicles 12:33.  We are told that from the tribe of Zebulun 50,000 men "helped David with an undivided heart" or “with undivided loyalty” depending on which translation is used.  In verse 40, I believe it indicates their families supported them with undivided hearts, also.  The Hebrew for “heart” in this instance, carries the meaning: “the center of”.  These men and their families had one common goal which their lives centered on, the most important goal of their lives:  To make David king as their God had commanded them.  Were they afraid for their own lives?  Their own lives did not seem to matter.  God's anointed was more important then anything.  God’s will was the number one priority in their lives.  They ALL had undivided hearts.

Is God's son most important to you and me?  Is Jesus Christ the center of your life?  Is he at the core of all you do?  The people of Zebulun had no fear.  Are we afraid to knock on a door or confront a stranger with the gospel?  When we are absent from the assembly because we are tired, want to watch something on TV, go to a sports event, or just rather do something else; are we serving God with an undivided heart?  Is your heart undivided?  Is my heart undivided?

Please, dear Lord, I pray for an undivided heart.
