“Well Done”
She was a beautiful young bride marrying a wonderful young man. Any parent would be proud to call her their daughter. An “A” student throughout twelve years of public education. A member of three or four championship Bible Bowl Teams. Member of the marching band. An exemplary college career. Successful teacher in the public schools. Had always been well-behaved and polite. Shy, yet very personable. By any standard she would be considered a successful young lady.
At the couple’s wedding reception the Best Man stood to toast the bride and groom. This young man appeared to be the younger brother of the 22 year old groom. After making some wonderful observations regarding the loyal character of his brother, he turned to the bride. His words to her were few…but thoughtful…meaningful words…words that will no doubt will leave an impression on the hearts of many who heard them. Sincere and heartfelt his words to the bride were that she had the “purest heart” he had ever seen. Reflecting on these words and looking back through the years at the life of this young lady, one could not help but think how perfectly this description suited her.
Could any Christian parent have heard anymore beautiful or meaningful words spoken of their child? Upon further contemplation, one could see that this might also be said of the other child of this family; himself quite a special young man. This type of young adults do not come from happenstance parenting, but rather through the efforts and prayers of two parents who took child-rearing as a God given task…and blessing. Parents who looked to God first. Parents who looked to the Bible as the “how-to” manual on parenting. Parents who modeled what they taught and admitted if they fall short. No doubt, if the children follow the example of godly marriage, which their parents set for them, they too will have wonderful marriages.
One could not help but imagine that as their daughter was aptly described as one of pure heart that the Father himself was smiling upon these parents…perhaps He was thinking, “Well done My children in the nurturing of your children. Well done.”
Though these Christian parents shy away from receiving open expressions of appreciation, I want to take this one time to say, “Roger…Debbie…so many of us thank God for you and your family…for the light of your lives being a guide to us all as you let the Father be seen in you. The difference you have both made in so many lives, you will probably never realize this side of heaven. Jesus said, 'Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.' May we also say, 'Blessed are the pure in heart for through them we see God.' We love you.”
